Opportunity for Gifted Students
The Opportunity Class is a district resource that caters for the special needs of gifted children in Years 5 and 6. In this environment it's okay to be clever and children with similar ability are able to work together on tasks that are designed to challenge them.
The class is based on the philosophy that each student should have the opportunity to develop to his/her potential in all areas of endeavour. The class provides opportunities for gifted children to work on a program that is appropriate for their needs. High achievement, originality, problem solving, higher order thinking and creativity are important elements of the learning program.
Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical.
Our gifted and talented program provides these students with learning opportunities on top of the normal curriculum.
Students also:
- Participate in a variety of national competitions
- Discuss philosophical issues
- Become involved in the schools creative arts program that includes band, choral and dance groups.
- Take on a leadership roll within the school
- Learn a new language
- Work on long term individual projects
- Develop independant working skills
- Join school sporting teams.

To be considered for enrolment, students must sit the opportunity class placement test in Year 4. The test is held between late July and early August.

Goonellabah Public School is one of 74 primary schools in NSW with an opportunity class.
